<P align=left><STRONG><FONT size=4>I believe the vest originally had a buckled strap at waist level in back - there are fragments of fabric at both sideseams that has been cut off and on each side, a line of old needlemarks 3" toward the center back that probably anchored the straps so they didn't sag. Whoever removed the buckle straps inadvertently cut a 1/2" hole into the muslin back on the right side - see close-up. The hole does not extend into the inner muslin layer.
The vest is lightly discolored from use and time - there are watermarks around both handwarmer pockets and you can faintly see a round discoloration below the right pocket opening that must have been from the owner's pocketwatch. The muslin lining and backing have turned a little beiger than the original color and there is some minor "foxing" to the muslin, like you get with old books.
A few small areas of open seams that do not affect the wearability of the vest - the largest, at the lower left corner of the vest front, was clumsily stitched by a more recent owner - it would be easy to remove those stitches and redo with a hidden "mattress" stitch.
The leather facing feels supple for the most part - I do find a single 1/4"split in the leather on the right side of the vest nearest the middle.
